Rise & Fall of Two Towers

RaFTT is a digital community project funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund designed to create a digital archive of the West Street Area in Coldhurst, Oldham during the time Summervale House and Crossbank House stood.

Our project partners First Choice Homes Oldham, Oldham Coliseum Theatre, OMBC, Geeks for Social Change & OL1 Oldham are excited to be delivering a Digital History Project to celebrate your stories of the area during the time the towers stood.

Our project requires you! We would love to hear any stories, memories or any artefacts you have of the area. To get involved please see our Contact Us page.

Summervale House and Crossbank House were built as the first phase of a huge new council estate at West Street and opened to residents in April 1975. The scheme formed the first phase of the estate with the ‘two towers standing like sentries’ at the Manchester Street roundabout, at the end of the internal by-pass. It was hoped they would eventually form an impressive entrance to the town from the Manchester side. (Oldham Evening Chronicle, 17 Mar 1975)

Nearly 50 years after construction started, in December 2021 work began to demolish the blocks, with funding provided to replace the two towers with a new housing development.
